As far as we knew, Dumbledore and Grindelwald didn’t meet until 1945, when Dumbledore famously defeated Grindelwald in a duel and took the Elder Wand. The previous movies revealed that this was because the men struck a magical blood pact that prevented one from moving against the other.

That did reveal a duel took place between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, but not until 1945 (linking Grindelwald’s downfall to World War II ending). Fantastic Beasts 3 is still in the 1930s, so some way off the timeline of their known duel, hinting at another Harry Potter retcon.
