Why Do a Urethrogram?

A urethrogram is usually carried out to show the cause of poor urinary flow thought to be caused by narrowing (a stricture) of the urethra. The most common cause for narrowing of the urethra in men is benign (non-cancerous) enlargement of the prostate gland.

How do you perform a Urethrogram?

You will lie on your back or side, and an x-ray of the urethra and bladder are taken. X-ray contrast agent (dye) is gently moved into your urethra. This may not be comfortable, but it doesn't take long. More x-rays are taken with the dye to see your urethra more clearly.

What are the indications for Urethrography?

Indications
  • pelvic trauma in the emergency department (retrograde only)
  • diminished urinary stream.
  • urethral strictures.
  • urethral diverticula.
  • urethral obstruction.
  • suspected urethral foreign bodies.
  • urethral mucosal tumors.
  • suspected urethral fistula.
