Why Do Arteriovenous Malformation Happen?

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) happen when a group of blood vessels in your body forms incorrectly. In these malformations, arteries and veins are unusually tangled and form direct connections, bypassing normal tissues.

Who is at risk for AVM?

This allows blood to leak (hemorrhage) into the brain or surrounding tissues and reduces blood flow to the brain. Cerebral AVMs are rare. Although the condition is present at birth, symptoms may occur at any age. Ruptures happen most often in people ages 15 to 20.

How can you prevent AVM?

Avoid any activity that may raise your blood pressure and put strain on a brain AVM, such as heavy lifting or straining. Also avoid taking any blood-thinning medications, such as warfarin.
