Why Do Babies Like Shushing?

Why it works
Newborns don't need silence. In fact, having just spent months in utero – where Mom's blood flow makes a shushing sound louder than a vacuum cleaner – they're happier, they're able to calm down, and they sleep better in a noisy environment. Not all noises are alike, however.

Why do we say shh to babies?

Since babies don't yet understand language, they're responding only to the sound itself. ... Babies are used to hearing many sound waves all at once, which is what we produce when we say "shh." This form of white noise may help a newborn feel safe, protected and close to mom – just like in the womb.

Is it OK to shush a baby?

Shush is the most natural sound for a new parent to calm their child. While it's considered taboo and pacifying to 'shush' someone when they're older, for babies the 'shush' is the best natural calming method.
