Why Do Balloons Lose Air?

Helium balloons float because helium is less dense than air. Helium balloons deflate because helium atoms are small enough to slip between spaces in the balloon material.

Why does air come out of balloons?

The collision of these air particles with the walls creates a high-pressure environment inside the balloon relative to the atmospheric pressure around it. This is why when a balloon is released, the high-pressure air flows out of the balloon to the low-pressure air surrounding it: "Winds blow from high to low."

How do you stop balloons deflating?

  1. Stretch out the latex balloons prior to inflating them by grabbing either end and pulling them in the opposite directions. ...
  2. Inflate the balloon and tie the bottom securely in a tight knot to help prevent air from escaping. ...
  3. Spray the balloons with a mist of hairspray.
