Why Does Amblyopia Occurs?

Amblyopia occurs when the nerve pathway from one eye to the brain does not develop during childhood. This problem develops because the abnormal eye sends the wrong image to the brain. This is the case in strabismus (crossed eyes). In other eye problems, the wrong image is sent to the brain.

Is amblyopia genetic?

Genetics play a role, too. Amblyopia tends to run in families. It's also more common in children born prematurely or those with developmental delays.

Can amblyopia go away?

Lazy eye, or amblyopia, affects around 3 out of every 100 children. The condition is treatable and typically responds well to strategies such as eye patching and wearing corrective lenses. The best results for lazy eye are typically seen when the condition is treated early, in children who are 7 years old or younger.
