Why Does Chocolate Make My Throat Irritated?

Ever had lots of deep fried food, chocolates or durian and end up getting a sore throat in a few hours or the next day? Well, some would say that this is due to the “heaty” food that you took. However, there is a likely medical reason for this. According to Dr Gan, these foods are actually acid-reflux causing foods.

Does chocolate affect throat?

For sore throats and coughs, try taking a piece of chocolate and hold it in your mouth, so it slowly dissolves and coats the throat. The chocolate works similarly to honey in the way it desensitizes aggravated nerves in the throat. Hot chocolate made from dark cacao is also very effective.

If you have an allergy to chocolate, you may have some of these symptoms after eating it, or even just coming into direct contact with it:
hives.shortness of breath.stomach cramps.swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat.vomiting.wheezing.

Is chocolate bad for acid reflux?

Chocolate

Chocolate is another common trigger for heartburn. Like high-fat foods, chocolate can relax the lower esophageal sphincter (14, 15 ). This may allow stomach acid to escape into the esophagus and cause heartburn. In addition, chocolate is made of cocoa, which contains the “happy hormone” serotonin.

A true allergy to cacao or cocoa is rare. Most cases of chocolate allergy are caused by an allergic reaction to an ingredient in chocolate or only a sensitivity to chocolate. Cases of severe allergy should be taken seriously and can be life-threatening.
