Why Eyes Crusted Shut?

If you have allergies or a cold, you may have woken up with wet or crusted discharge in your eyes. This discharge can cause your eyes to become so wet or gummy that it may feel like your eyes are glued shut. This symptom is also referred to as sticky eyes.

How do you stop eye crusting?

Most eye boogers are a sign that the eye is healthy and that it is getting rid of dirt and debris. Good eye hygiene, including removing makeup at night and keeping the eyes clean by wiping the closed eyes with a clean, warm washcloth, can help reduce the eye discharge. In people with dry eyes, eye drops may also help.

What is eye crusting?

Everyone, at some point, finds “sleep” in their eyes upon waking. Whether you call it sleep crust, eye gunk, eye goop or something else, it is generally harmless. The crusty material you find in the corner of your eyes after sleep is residue from the eye's normal protective process.
