Si is the member of group 14 ,when doped with the group 13 elements ,the holes will be created in the lattice since there is no fourth electron available for sharing. The holes will lead to electrical conductivity and the crystals thus formed are semiconductors.
Why we add impurities in semiconductors?
Impurities are added into a semiconductor to actually increase the electric conductivity. The process of adding an impurity into the semiconductor to increase its ability to conduct electricity is known as doping and the impure semiconductor is known as a doped semiconductor.
Why semiconductors are doped?
Semiconductors are doped to generate either a surplus or a deficiency in valence electrons. Doping allows researchers to exploit the properties of sets of elements, referred to as dopants, in order to modulate the conductivity of a semiconductor.
