Habit 5 is a timeless principle we all strive to teach our kids; it teaches them to be confident when speaking to others while also teaching them the importance of listening to others when they are speaking. Habit 5 is about communication. The best way to teach someone how to communicate is by practicing it with them.
Why is it important to seek first to understand?
If we seek to understand others first, we’re more likely to listen before we speak. When we do that, we can avoid saying things that on reflection we shouldn’t have. We also tend to ask more questions, rather than making statements, which keeps us from over-committing and contradicting ourselves.
What are habits 5 examples?
- Ignoring: not listening at all.
- Pretending: “Yes. Hmm. Right.”
- Selective listening: hearing only selective parts of the conversation.
- Attentive listening: paying attention and focusing energy on the words that are being said.
