Why Is Hdfs Append Only

Normal file systems have mechanisms for appending new data. Of course, if you fill up the last block, you will create a new block. Only one single write or append to any file is allowed at the same time in HDFS, so there is no concurrency to handle.

Is HDFS append only?

Each file on HDFS is append-only. Once a file is created and written to, the file can either be appended to or deleted. It is not possible to change the data in the file.

Are HDFS files read only?

HDFS follow Write once Read many models. So we cannot edit files already stored in HDFS, but we can append data by reopening the file.
