The name is a misnomer, as the statistic is not a percentage but an average of how many bases a player achieves per at bat. ... The slugging percentage would have to be divided by 4 to actually be a percentage (of bases achieved per at bat out of total bases possible).
Why do they call it slugging?
According to Slug-Lines.com, the term probably came from bus drivers, who would be on the lookout for counterfeit coins (also known as slugs). Slugs used to stand at bus stops, waiting for cars to pick them up. When bus drivers would stop, the commuters at the stops would waive them off.
Where did the term slug come from?
The term slug derives from the days of hot-metal printing, when printers set type by hand in a small form called a stick. Later huge Linotype machines turned molten lead into casts of letters, lines, sentences and paragraphs. A line of lead in both eras was known as a slug.
