Why Is Outlast So Scary?

the game is terrifying, overall. it's a large combination of jump scares, running and hiding, not having a weapon, and also psychologically scary. you never know what is going to happen next, which keeps you and your brain on edge. great game highly recommend playing the first outlast prior to the second one though.

Outlast is freaky until you realize nothing will kill you if you just keep running in a circle around the map. That's what undermines its horror. Great atmosphere, grotesque character design and decent pacing, but it all falls flat after the player realizes nothing will kill them if they have room to run.
