Why Is Pvc Plumbing Bad

PVC pipes are inexpensive to install and can last indefinitely! However, they are only suitable for cold water. Hot water will cause the PVC pipe to leach chemicals, specifically vinyl chloride, into the water.

Are PVC pipes bad for you?

PVC contains dangerous chemical additives including phthalates, lead, cadmium, and/or organotins, which can be toxic to your child’s health. These toxic additives can leach out or evaporate into the air over time, posing unnecessary dangers to children.

Are PVC water lines safe?

If the PVC pipes in your water supply are old, most of what could have leached out already has, at least at non-elevated temperatures. A possible solution is to replace your PVC pipes with an approved material such as CPVC (a stronger type of PVC) or copper. Both materials are considered safe for potable water.
