Why Is Tree Bark Rough?

As the tree continues to grow the pressure from growth (breaking and tearing) and the environment (rain, wind etc.) cause the bark to become rough.

What does rough bark mean?

1 : any of several virus diseases of woody plants (as cherry, apple, citrus) characterized by generalized roughening and often longitudinal splitting of the bark. 2 : a disease of apples that is caused by a fungus (Phomopsis mali) and produces rough cankers on the twigs and branches.

Why are tree barks different?

As a tree grows, its wood thickens and pushes out against the bark that surrounds it. The different ways in which the outer bark adapts to this pressure is what gives each species its distinctive appearance. Some species maintain their original outer layers (the initial periderm) for their entire lives.
