Why Isn't Nico Hoerner Playing?

Hoerner suffered an oblique injury while attempting to check his swing Wednesday, and he'll be unavailable for at least 10 days. The Cubs called up Sergio Alcantara to serve as infield depth, but David Bote will likely work as the primary second baseman while the 24-year-old Hoerner is sidelined.

What happened Nico Hoerner?

It hasn't happened. Hoerner has been on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique since July 29, and because of tension he felt in the muscle last month at Triple-A Iowa, the Cubs put his rehab assignment on pause.

Is Nico Hoerner still on the IL?

If it wasn't clear already, Nico Hoerner will play shortstop for the Cubs down the stretch, after he comes off the injured list. And perhaps going forward. The Cubs are using the rest of the season to evaluate their roster heading into 2022.
