Why Nrc in Assam?

The NRC of Assam is a verified list of Indian citizens living in the state. The citizens' register was created to identify foreign nationals. It has been two years since the NRC was published in Assam. The list was prepared by collecting information through a process that went on for nearly five years.

Why is NRC important in Assam?

Its purpose is to document all the legal citizens of India so that the illegal immigrants can be identified and deported. It has been implemented for the state of Assam starting in 2013–2014. The Government of India plans to implement it for the rest of the country in 2021.

Why did NRC start in Assam?

NRC for Indian citizens in Assam was first created in 1951. Manipur and Tripura were also granted permission to create their own NRCs, but it never materialised. The reason behind the move was to identify Indian citizens in Assam amid "unabated" migration from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
