The researchers' new ornithopter design mitigates the flexing problem using hinges and bearings in pairs. Elastic elements also help improve efficiency, and the ornithopter is in fact more efficient with its flapping wings than it would be with a rotary propeller-based propulsion system.
Why was the ornithopter important?
Because ornithopters can be made to resemble birds or insects, they could be used for military applications such as aerial reconnaissance without alerting the enemies that they are under surveillance. Several ornithopters have been flown with video cameras on board, some of which can hover and maneuver in small spaces.
How does the ornithopter work?
Ornithopters imitate nature as no natural creatures have any rotating parts. The principle of operation of the ornithopter is same as the airplane; the forward motion through the air allows the wings to deflect air downward, producing lift. The flapping motion of the wings takes the place of rotating propeller.
