Why Retention Doesn't Work?

Recent studies, including our own analyses of Chicago data, indicate that grade retention does not improve students' chances for educational success. In fact, they indicate that retention often is harmful to scholastic development, especially if it occurs early.

What are the pros and cons of retention?

Grade retention has a negative impact on all areas of a child's achievement (reading, math, and language) and socio-emotional adjustment (peer relationships, self-esteem, problem behaviors and attendance). Students who are retained are more likely to drop out of school compared to students who were never retained.

Is retention ever a good idea?

They found that retention in third grade had large positive effects on reading and math achievement in the short run. Although these initial benefits faded over time, students who had been held back entered high school performing at a higher level relative to their grade level than similar students who'd been promoted.
