It is an important piece of information when buying a used camera as it gives some indication of how much the camera has been used, but it is not the only indication of wear and the number itself needs to be viewed in context. DSLR cameras have a mechanical shutter mechanism to cover and expose the digital sensor.
Why does the shutter count matter?
Generally, the shutter count will give you a great indication of the amount of use a camera has seen, similar to checking the mileage on a car. Cameras are rated for shutter durability, with enthusiast models often rated around the 150,000-shot mark, and professional models rated at 300,000 shots or higher.
What is a good shutter count for a used camera?
A used camera can be expected to have about 10,000 shutter actuations per year for normal use. Again going back to the car analogy, if your used camera has a shutter count of more than 100,000, you should probably pass on that camera.
