In multivariate studies, like ordination or cluster analysis, the arcsine transformation is preferred. For ecological data, proportions of 0% are common, such as when a species doesn't occur in a sample. Values of 100% are also possible, such as when only a single species is present in a sample.
What is the purpose of Arcsine transformation?
The arcsine transformation is a combination of the arcsine and square root transformation functions. It takes the form of asin(sqrt(x)) where x is a real number from 0 to 1. It is a square root transformation that helps in dealing with probabilities, percents, and proportions that are close to either one or zero.
Why do we use transformations?
Data is transformed to make it better-organized. Transformed data may be easier for both humans and computers to use. Properly formatted and validated data improves data quality and protects applications from potential landmines such as null values, unexpected duplicates, incorrect indexing, and incompatible formats.
