Dedicated to converting the American Indians to Christianity, the Spanish Franciscan priest Antonio Margil de Jesús was a missionary in Central America and in what are now Mexico and Texas. In 1720 he founded the most successful of the Spanish missions in Texas: San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, in San Antonio.
