Why Was Darwen Tower Built?

The tower was built to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. This was a special time for Darwen as the town's people had just won the right to roam the moors on the many footpaths which still exist today.

Tons of fine-grained red sandstone from the nearby quarry were used in the construction of the octagonal 86ft tower which stands on a base 1,225 ft high.

Long-awaited restoration work to bring the iconic Darwen Tower back to its former glory has begun today. The delicate restoration work by a specialist contractor will include the use of lime mortar to repoint its walls to ensure they are weatherproof and watertight.
