In 1960, in the midst of a great depression and facing rising death duties, the 10th Marquess, Denis Edward, his wife Jose and son Jeremy (11th Marquess) decided to open Westport House and the grounds to the visiting public. It was a pioneering venture in a place and at a time that was remote and depressed.

Westport House in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, is a well known Irish tourist attraction, owned by the Hughes family who own a number of businesses in the west of Ireland. Until January 2017, it was the ancestral seat of the Browne family, whose head was the Marquess of Sligo.
When was Westport house built?
Built in 1730, the house survived “English Williamites, a French invasion, two fires, a famine and civil war”, according to the 10th Marquess of Sligo, Denis Browne, who died in 1991. It was opened to the public by his son, Lord Altamont, in 1961.
