Why Westminster Dog Show?

The name “Westminster” has nothing to do with England.
One thing led to another, and the group decided it needed a real venue to compare hounds — a dog show in Manhattan. In 1877, they named themselves the Westminster Kennel Club, after their favorite bar, and hosted the First Annual New York Bench Show of Dogs.

What is the point of the Westminster Dog Show?

The Westminster Dog Show is a competition hosted by the American Kennel Club that brings dogs of all breeds from around the world together to compete in agility, obedience and conformation contests.

Where did the Westminster dog show originated?

The show originated as a show for gun dogs, primarily Setters and Pointers, initiated by a group of hunters who met regularly at the Westminster Hotel at Irving Place and Sixteenth Street in Manhattan. They decided to create a kennel club called the Westminster Kennel Club specifically to hold a dog show.
