Will Black Snakes Chase You?

"Usually they're nervous and excitable and they're territorial," said Tulsa naturalist Donna Horton. "They may chase you to try to get you out of their territory. They might only chase you three or four feet, even if you go a mile, but it will dart out at you and put up an act to defend its territory."

Can black snakes hurt you?

Both are nonvenomous, with white or grayish bellies, and eat mostly rodents and other small animals. Neither is out to hurt you — they're only around because there's food nearby, and that food isn't you.

Is it safe to pick up a black snake?

You should never attempt to pick up a venomous snake under any circumstance. If, however, you're absolutely certain that a snake is not venomous, it may be safe to catch the snake by hand. Never attempt to handle any snake you cannot identify with 100 percent certainty.
