Avens generally prefer moist, well-drained soils in full sun to light shade but do not like wet winter soils. They flourish in full sun gardens in cooler zones if ample water is provided but will appreciate afternoon shade in hot and humid climates.
Can geums tolerate shade?
Geum coccineum cultivars enjoy partial shade but will scorch in direct sun, whereas the larger flowered – and often most popular – Geum chiloense cultivars grow well in sunshine as long as the ground in sufficiently moist. It is well worth dividing the plants every 3 to 4 years.
What conditions do geums like?
Grow geums in a moisture retentive soil. They thrive in acid or alkaline soils but won't cope well in very dry soils or in a baking hot south-facing border. Geum rivale types do best in a shady spot and are ideal partners for hellebores.
