Winter Storm Warning in Effect Through Monday Morning | News

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning across much of northern Nevada and the Sierra on Saturday night.

Starting at 10 p.m. on Saturday a winter storm warning will take effect in Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Verdi, Virginia City, Mina, Gardnerville, Yerington, Schurz, Smith Valley and Hawthorne.

The warning will remain in effect until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Up to eight inches of snow is expected to fall over the course of the storm, including on the valley floor according to the NWS.

Above 5,000 to 5,500 feet one to two feet of show is possible.

Travel is not advised in the region as it could be very difficult, even impossible according to the NWS.

Winds gusting as high as 60 miles per hour are possible over mountaintops and wind prone areas along U.S. 395 and U.S. 95 with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour possible in the valleys.

Winter storm warnings are also set for 10 p.m. on Saturday across the Sierra, including Tahoe City, South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Stateline, Truckee, Glenbrook, Coleville, Bridgeport, Mammoth Lakes, Sierraville, Portola, Westwood, Loyalton and Susanville.

Those warnings are set to expire at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Up to two feet of snow are possible across the Sierra, with isolated higher amounts up to three feet in some locations.

Travel is also not advised in the Sierra, with heavy snows expected to make many roads impassable.
