What is thatch and why is it good for your yard? It seems a little clunky, you know. However, half an inch of straw is good for your garden, providing insulation against temperature extremes, helping to retain moisture in the soil and adding a protective layer. If the reed gets more than 3/4" thick, that's a problem.

How do you get rid of thatch on a lawn?

Insert the tines into the straw and pull up to loosen and remove the debris. As you rake, you should feel and see the straw coming out of the ground. If you are planning to rent a scarifier, mark any level irrigation pipes, nozzles, or underground utilities before you begin.
