Your Question: Can Bios Chip Go Bad?
Contents

Like any computer hardware component, BIOS (Basic Input Output System) chips can fail due to overheating, over voltage, or even the random interactions of cosmic rays making it down through the atmosphere. BIOS chips can be rewritten (or flashed) with updated drivers.

Can a BIOS chip be replaced?

If your BIOS isn’t flashable it’s still possible to update it – provided it’s housed in a socketed DIP or PLCC chip. This involves physically removing the existing chip and either replacing it after its been reprogrammed with the later version of BIOS code or exchanging it for a completely new chip.

How do I fix a corrupted BIOS chip?

To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your PC and disconnect all cables.
  2. Open the PC case.
  3. Look for a jumper that has CLEAR CMOS or something similar written next to it.
  4. Move the jumper to the clear position.
  5. Turn on your PC and turn it off.
  6. Now move the jumper back to its original position.
