Tragic Loss: Moustapha Sylla, Ivorian Defender, Passes Away After Collapsing During Football Match

At the age of 21, Ivory Coast footballer Moustapha Sylla tragically passed away after suffering a heart attack on the field.

Sylla, a defender, collapsed during the game between Racing Club Abidjan and SOL FC at the Robert Champroux Stadium in Abidjan on Sunday. Video footage captured the left-back losing his balance and falling near the centre-circle before being assisted by opposing players.

Despite the tragic event, officials opted to continue the match in the Ivorian top flight after Sylla was taken off the field.

“Moustapha Sylla died on Sunday night after falling ill on the field during the match with Sol FC,” said Logossina Cissé, the president of the Ivorian club, to AFP.

“Sylla passed away while being transported to the hospital. He arrived in September and was only 21 years old.”

RC Abidjan shared on its Twitter account: “Our defender Sylla Moustapha died this evening after collapsing on the field.

“On behalf of the management, we extend heartfelt condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Moustapha. Rest in peace, LION.”

The club announced that Sylla’s funeral would take place on Monday at the municipal cemetery in Dabou, Ivory Coast.

Sylla joined RC Abidjan in September from the Malian side Djoliba AC.
